Necklace Size Guide

Necklace Size Guide

Finding the right necklace length can be difficult if you are unsure where to start. This guide explains how to measure your neck, understand necklace sizes in centimetres, and choose the perfect length for both minimalist chains and statement stone jewellery.

Measuring Matters

Every neck is unique — and so is every piece of jewellery.

The way a necklace sits depends not only on your neck size, but also on the design and materials. A fine, delicate chain will fall differently compared to a necklace made from larger stones or pearls, which naturally take up more space.

That is why all necklaces at Stones and Stuff Stockholm are designed with flexibility in mind. Many styles are adjustable, and all fixed-length necklaces are available in a range of sizes — from XS to XL — at no additional cost.

The goal is simple: jewellery that fits you, not the other way around.

For the best result, always measure your neck before choosing a size.

How to Measure Your Neck

Measuring your neck is quick and easy. You will need:

  • A soft measuring tape (tailor’s tape)
  • A ruler (optional)
  • A mirror (optional)

1. Stand naturally

Keep your head straight, and your shoulders relaxed.

2. Place the tape correctly

Wrap the measuring tape around the base of your neck, where you would like the necklace to sit. The tape should rest gently against your skin — do not pull it tight.

3. Read the measurement

Note the number in centimetres where the tape meets. This is your neck circumference.

4. Add extra length for comfort

  • Add 1–2 cm for a close, choker-style fit
  • Add 2–5 cm for a more relaxed fit

💡 Tip: Necklaces are circular, so let the tape sit naturally — avoid tightening it.

Necklace Sizes at Stones and Stuff Stockholm

There are two types of necklaces available:

Adjustable necklaces

These are designed for flexibility and everyday ease:
38 cm chain + 2 cm clasp + 5 cm extension = up to 45 cm total length

Fixed-length necklaces

These have a set overall length, so choosing the correct size is important:

  • S – 40 cm
  • M – 42 cm
  • L – 44 cm
  • XL – 46 cm

💡 Tip: If you are unsure, measure out 40 cm, 42 cm, 44 cm or 46 cm with a tape and gently hold it around your neck to see where it falls.

Material Matters

The material and size of the jewellery also affect how a necklace fits.

  • Minimalist/fine chains: add around 2 cm to your neck measurement
  • Larger stones or pearl necklaces: add 3–4 cm, as the volume takes up more space

Example

If your neck measures 36 cm:

  • A 40 cm (S) necklace will sit close to the base of your neck
  • A 42 cm (M) necklace will rest slightly lower, around the collarbone

If your neck measures 41 cm:

  • A 44 cm (L) necklace will sit close to the base of your neck
  • A 46 cm (XL) necklace will rest slightly lower, around the collarbone

💡 Tip: For a choker, choose a slightly shorter length. For a looser fit, size up.

Custom Sizes

All necklace lengths are clearly listed in the product options.

Custom sizes between 35–50 cm are available at no extra cost, allowing you to find your perfect fit.

Common Necklace Lengths

  • 35–40 cm – Choker length (depending on neck size)
  • 45 cm – Sits at the collarbone
  • 50–55 cm – Falls just below the collarbone
  • 60 cm+ – Longer styles or mala-inspired pieces

Tips for the Best Fit

  • Consider your neck shape and body proportions
  • Think about the necklines you wear most often
  • Remember that pendants add visual length
  • If unsure, choose an adjustable necklace for flexibility

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right necklace length is a small detail that makes a big difference. When a piece fits well, it not only looks better but also feels more natural to wear.

      Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common necklace length?

The most common necklace length is around 45 cm, which typically sits at the collarbone and suits most outfits.

How tight should a necklace be?

A necklace should feel comfortable and not tight. For a choker, allow 1–2 cm extra. For a standard fit, add 2–5 cm to your neck measurement.

How do I measure my neck without a tape?

You can use a piece of string and then measure it with a ruler. Wrap it around your neck, mark the point where it meets, and measure the length in centimetres.

      What length is a choker?

A choker is usually between 35–40 cm, depending on your neck size.

      Does material affect necklace length?

Yes. Fine chains require less extra length, while larger stone or pearl necklaces need an additional 3–4 cm for a comfortable fit.
