Ring sizing made simple
Do you ever remember what ring size you are? I never.
I never do — and I make rings for a living!
Getting your size right makes buying rings so much easier. So let’s break it down: what matters, what to avoid, and how to find the perfect fit.
First time buying ring? Then it's good to know:
- good fit is when the ring pass over your knuckle comfortably while fitting snugly at the base.
- good test is to put it on and shake your hand to see if it doesn't fall.
- if you buy the ring online, the risk of buying wrong size is greater.
- That's why we have 3 groups of universal ring sizes, which has 3mm adjustment.
- You can always return the ring bought at Snss.
If you measure your size first time:
- You can measure your old ring, or a finger.
- There are a few ways to do it — some more accurate than others.
Best tools to use:
- Mandrel: Place an existing ring on a mandrel to find the size.
- Sizing rings: Use a set of metal or plastic sizing rings for the most precise result.
- Ring tape: Flexible tape rings are also great — you can find them [here], on Amazon or eBay (pictured below).
Homemade methods: proceed with caution
You may have heard of measuring with a string or strip of paper — this method is not reliable, but it may work for rings on elastic bands.
Using a string or paper strip to measure your finger is an unreliable method. This method may work for the rings on the elastic bands. For metal earrings, professional tools are best.
If you still want to try:
- Cut a strip of paper or a snore.
- Wrap it around the base of your finger.
- Mark where the paper overlaps.
- Measure the length with a ruler.
Avoid using string as it can stretch, leading to inaccurate results.
When measuring your finger
Keep in mind:
- Temperature matters – Fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat.
- Time of day matters – Your finger size can change throughout the day.
- Climate matters – Think about where you live and wear your jewellery most.
When in doubt, visit a local jeweller. Most offer finger sizing for free.
