Jewellery care during holidays

Jewellery care during holidays

Holidays are a time for relaxation, adventure, and creating memories.

Whether you're lounging on a beach, exploring a new city, or attending festive gatherings, travelling with jewellery requires some special attention to ensure its safety and longevity.

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to take care of your pieces while on holidays.

First step: plan your jewellery selection!

1. Less is more. When choosing which pieces to bring, opt for versatility. Select jewellery that can complement multiple outfits - but consider bringing fewer, more meaningful pieces rather than a large assortment.

2. Leave valuables at home. If you own very valuable or sentimental pieces, think twice before taking them on your trip. Consider leaving irreplaceable items at home to avoid the risk of loss or theft.

Second step: use proper storage!

1. Choose a proper jewellery case.

Invest in a good-quality travel jewellery case. These cases are designed with compartments and padding to keep your pieces organised and protected from scratches and tangles.

If you don't have the jewellery case, use either ziplock bags, or the soft bags I gave you to transport and store your pieces. This will prevent items from rubbing against each other and reduces the risk of damage.

2. Use anti-tarnish strips. If you travel with silver, gold, copper, bronze, nickel, tin and plated metals, take the anti-tarnish strips with you. They will protect your jewellery from tarnishing.

Third step: safe transport

Always pack your jewellery in your carry-on luggage. Checked luggage can be lost or mishandled, putting your precious items at risk. For added security, wear your most valuable pieces during travel. This minimises the risk of theft and ensures they are with you at all times.

Fourth step: daily care and maintenance

1. Remove jewellery during activities! Take off your jewellery before swimming, exercising, hiking or engaging in any activities that could expose it to harsh chemicals, saltwater, or physical damage.

2. Store Safely in Accommodations. Use the safe provided in your hotel room to store your jewellery when not in use. If a safe is unavailable, conceal your jewellery in less obvious places within your luggage.

3. Avoid contact with lotions and perfumes. I can never stress this enough. Avoid applying lotions, perfumes, and sprays  on your jewellery. Always do it well before wearing your pieces. These substances can tarnish and damage metals and gemstones over time.

Step five: regular cleaning

Pack a small jewellery cleaning kit with a soft cloth, mild soap, and a brush. Regularly clean your jewellery to maintain its sparkle and remove any buildup of oils or dirt. Gently polish your jewellery with a soft cloth. Avoid using paper towels or tissues, as they can scratch the surface of your pieces.

Step six: Please be aware of environmental factors

1. Temperature and Humidity. Extreme temperatures and high humidity can affect certain materials. Be mindful of the climate at your destination and store your jewellery accordingly.

2. Sunlight. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause some gemstones to fade. Store your jewellery in a shaded area to preserve its colour and lustre.

And last but not least: insurance and documentation

Consider obtaining travel insurance that covers lost or stolen jewellery. This adds an extra layer of protection and peace of mind during your trip.
Carry a copy of any receipts, appraisals, and photographs of your jewellery. In case of loss or theft, this documentation will be valuable for insurance claims.

To sum up, caring for your jewellery while on holiday ensures that your cherished pieces remain safe and beautiful throughout your travels.

By planning ahead, using proper storage, and following daily care tips, you can enjoy your holidays without worrying about your precious accessories.

Remember, a little extra effort in taking care of your jewellery can go a long way in preserving its beauty and value for years to come.
