Pearls, pearls pearls...
So loved and treasured for centuries.
Beautiful creations of water creatures that hate water so much. Yes, hate. This is actually the fact that surprises my clients the most. "What do you say, pearls don't like water? They come from the water!" They say.
To maintain the beauty of your pearls for years to come, please keep to these practical tips that will keep your pearls shiny and beautiful. This guide takes into account various types of jewellery such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and anklets.
First of all: Why Care for Pearls?
Pearls are delicate and their surface can easily be damaged when exposed to water, alcohol, chemicals, moisture, or even extreme temperatures. Proper care and avoiding harmful elements will help maintain their natural lustre and durability over the years.
Care for freshwater pearls vs. saltwater pearls
Freshwater and saltwater pearls differ slightly in structure and origin, but the general principles of care are similar. Saltwater pearls are typically more resistant to damage than freshwater pearls, but both require gentle handling and regular care.
Okay, let's get into it.
Care guide for pearls:
1. First of all: avoid contact with water!
Pearls don't like water and humidity. They will deteriorate upon contact with water. Of course, after the first or second damping, you won't see the difference, but the structure of the pearl can be already damaged. It will lose its shine, and eventually break.
The worst is sea and swimming pool water - they're full of harsh ingredients that seriously damage the pearls.
2. Avoid contact with chemicals!
Pearls are sensitive to chemicals found in cosmetics, perfumes, and cleaning agents. Remove pearls before applying such products to prevent damage, dullness, or discolouration.
3. Avoid all colouring agents!
Don't paint in pearls, colour your hair or do makeup. Stained pearls are stained forever. Harsh ingredients of paint will also damage them.
4. Protect from scratches and impact:
Pearls can easily scratch and break. Avoid throwing or bumping them. Avoid wearing them with other jewellery, especially chains that can scratch them.
Avoid wearing during intense activities or household chores. Also, avoid sleeping in pearls.
5. Store pearls properly:
Proper storage is crucial for pearls. Keep them separate from other metal or gemstone jewellery that may scratch their surface.
- Choose a storage place that is dry and at a steady room temperature. Don't keep it in bathroom, in open space where the direct sunlight can reach it or close to the heat sources.
- Store pearl jewellery in soft breathable materials such as satin, velvet, or silk pouches. You can purchase dedicated storage boxes lined with velvet to prevent scratches.
- Do not store it in plastic bags or containers, as they can cause moisture buildup.
6. Do proper maintenance:
Regularly maintaining your pearl jewellery not only preserves their beauty but also extends their lifespan.
- Gentle cleaning:
- Avoid extreme conditions:
Pearls dislike extreme temperatures or humidity. Avoid wearing them in places with too high or too low temperatures. Don't take it to hot girl summer holidays or to ski resorts - or hiking in the jungle. Avoid high humidity, too low or too warm temperatures. Of course, don't use pearls in the sauna.
- Regular wear:
Paradoxically, regular wear of pearl jewellery can help maintain their shine as natural skin oils can polish them further. Remember to clean pearls regularly after each use.
- Regular checkups:
Check your jewellery regularry, if it doesn't break, if the clasp works properly or if pearls are in good condition.
- The last touch-up on your styling
Always wear pearls as a last step to your stylisation. Makeup, creams, perfume - it all has to be used before wearing them.
More specific care tips for your jewellery type:
Anklets are often exposed to body oils, moisture, and can have contact with water. Take them off before swimming - as you know saltwater and chlorine will affect pearls negatively. But if you forget, take them off, dry with soft material or towel, and let them air dry completely.
Following these rules will help you enjoy the beauty and radiance of pearl jewellery for many years. If you have any questions, feel free to comment or write me.
